The music video for "Big Plans" was filmed in Verazruz, Mexico. A place that is full of tropical beauty and mystery. Magical memories from my childhood spent in Veracruz made the filming of this video a significant experience.
Big plans is the very first video for Miss Cactus & The Desert and I was super excited to get my creative powers going with it. I was extremely lucky to have the opportunity of filming it in another country. Especially because we did it in my dad's homestate Veracruz.
“La Antigua was the only place I wasn't familiar with, but I was immediatly ethralled by its mystique and enchant.”
The spots in Veracruz we filmed in include La Playa de Chachalacas, The Ancient Ruins of Cempoala (as well as the streets of Cempoala) and the old pueblo La Antigua.
Chachalacas is a beach with sand dunes. The combination of the desert and tropical apsects of this location give it an out of this world look. Additionally it embodies the idea of an Oasis, which is the title of the EP. In this particular beach, braiding hair is an old custom and it is typical to see people working on other people's hair there. Therefore, I decided to sport the braids in order to really intigrate myself into my environment.
Cempoala is the town where most of my Jarocho family lives, and it is where I usually stayed in my vacations as a kid. La Antigua was the only placve I wasn't as familiar with but I was immediately entralled by its mystique and enchant. This was the place where Hernan Cortez first arrived, making it a historical and very old pueblo (hence it's name).
Family First!
Thank good I have fabulous and goodlucking family members who agreed to be involved in my project. My two gorgeous cousins joined in as my models and my uncle also delighted the camera with his appereance as the chaffaur in the pick-up truck scenes. Additionally, my mom turned into the fairy godmother of the video. She braided my hair and took care of the other girls' makeup and hair. She also acted as set designer and made that flowered up tricicle look supercolorful 🌼! The filming was the only part that was done by two non-related videographers from Veracruz. I loved working with them, and since they have mostly done music videos for cumbia groups of the area, this turned out to be something out the norm and fun for them.
“The video is meant to capture the sweet and carefree essence of the song”
Directing this visual felt like putting the feeling I felt when I wrote the sinlge "Big Plans" into life. The video is meant to capture the sweet and carefree essence of the song. The takes of the sunrise at the beach carried the theme of starting new and fresh, while the scenes in Cempoala and La Antigua show the color and natural beauty of the culturally rich place that is Veracruz.
